Evolution of the Species... One of the first things that you notice about most comics is that the look of a strip tends to change over time, especially early on in its run. This seems to be a natural progression as the artist firms up the drawing style and look of the characters. Since I decided to start over by redrawing many of my previous strips, I thought it might be fun to do a little side-by-side comparison of how the look has changed. If nothing else, it should provide some evidence that in fact my artwork has improved over time (albeit with a long ways yet to go). To start with, you can see here how the main characters themselves have gradually evolved:
Back when I started the first run of the strip for my college paper, I really had no previous drawing experience (outside of my elementary school art class). I'd say this is pretty obvious when looking at the first strip to be run (or the updated version, for that matter).
After a few weeks, I started to get a little more comfortable with drawing the strip, although the characters still seemed to be trying to find their images.
With the current run, you might notice a few added details...
...or characters' roles reversed.
All of the strips had to originally be done as a daily format, which in some cases meant cramming in a lot of dialogue and artwork into a pretty short space. It's nice to to see how some of these work in the Sunday-strip format instead.
